ACTIVATING POCHE:
AN AUGMENTATION OF SURFACE SUCCESSION

LOCATION:

PALAZZO BARBERINI - ROME, ITALY

[FALL 2017]

The intent of “Activating Poche: An Augmentation of Surface Succession” is to analyze and interpret the qualities of a hidden gem found on a square of the Nolli Map of Rome. Researching Palazzo Barberini, a Baroque style palace with a dense history of additive factors, led to the decision to explore the many ceiling typologies and interesting poche spaces created in both plan and section as a result of many changes to the building over time.

The focus of my analysis resulted from the cycle from ancient structure through baroque style to what can be achieved with present day technologies. Through parametric modeling, the existing vaulted ceilings of Palazzo Barberini were warped to generate new typologies with structural implications that mesh historical techniques with modern technology. The combination of some of the new celing typologies create endless possibilities of new poche spaces and surface conditions that are able to be created by contemporary means and methods.
