THE CRYSTAL FORUM

LOCATION:

MONTREAL, CANADA

[SPRING 2018]

The intent of this project is to create a public forum within the lively downtown Arts District of Montreal through a performing arts and cultural center. By creating a grand sloping plaza, people from the city are drawn to the building and are confronted by a monumental crystalline mass. Pedestrians are directed into the atrium where they are then diverted into the programmatic bulk of the space. As they continue to higher levels, they are exposed to moments of clarity and view points out to the city from grand stairs in the cantilevered space. Main programmatic elements include a restaurant, cafe, gallery space, and blackbox theater. The goal of this building is to balance the grids created by the interior and exterior urban conditions of Montreal by using a cleanly split division of form: one portion created from dense stone materials, and the other through airy glass elements.
